Architectural Quiz

Another architectural quiz along the same lines as the previous one.
Can you guess the original function of this building?
Any suggestions as to where it might be located?
Where do you think its architectural influences came from?
I will tell you about it in my next post.
NEWS UPDATE!!!
Sooty is getting bolder and bolder. Today he arrived with his girlfriend, but she scampered off quickly through the bushes when she saw me. Sooty, however, stood his ground and stared at me thought the sitting room window.

    1. Dear June - I was really surprised at the way he stood his ground staring at us through the window. As I mentioned the hind or doe deer scampered off quickly.

  2. The Church steeple in the background and the olive tree in the vase should give me a hint.. but I really have no Idea.. I might say Italy! Yet again it could be England.. will wait to see the answer.

  3. Hello Rosemary:
Your building is a great puzzle to us. We have no ideas about it at all.We shall read with interest when you reveal all......well, perhaps not all exactly!!!

As for Sooty...he is simply adorable and, as you say, seems to be getting very brave in approaching so close to the house. And what is he nibbling in the garden we wonder?

    1. I will not leave you in suspense for long Jane and Lance.
Sooty is getting to be very brave, and just before I photographed him he was eating the heather which you can see at his feet. However, that is not a problem, saves us trimming it.

  5. Dear Rosemary,

Sooty really does have a sooty face; I wonder whether that dark look will change with age.

I would call your building a late 19th century interpretation of Romanesque. I have no idea what it might have been used for so I'll take a leap and say it was an armory.

    1. Dear Mark - that is a good guess, but not quite right. I will show the answer very soon.
I do not know if his black nose and eyes will change, in fact I am not sure how old he is. I can't believe he was so close to us today with just a sheet of glass separating us.

  6. Hi Rosemary, If this were in America, I would say that it looks like a Masonic or other auditorium.

    1. Dear Jim - it is not easy is it? Its use was, I think, really surprising.

  7. Dear Rosemary, Unless that terra cotta pot was transplanted to another country, I would guess that the building could be in Italy. But pots are easily moved. First I thought that the building has Moorish influences...but the arches are wrong. I think Mark is correct, it is Romanesque in design. Could it have been used as an electric power transformer? Looking forward to the answer.
Sooty's name suits him perfectly. How tall is he? He looks different than our deer who are ravaging my winter vegetables. Wonderful photos, as always. ox, Gina

    1. Dear Gina - Sooty is a Fallow deer, about 150cms high - not very big - however, I think that he is quite young. We have Red deer, Sika deer, Chinese deer and Muntjacs in this country. He seems to only eat our hedges, fruit trees, and was nibbling the heather today. Most of the things we are not too concerned about, as we have to trim anyway.
Regarding the building, shrewd judgement on your part.

  8. Dear Rosemary,
The arches have that Norman look but the building seems to have a slightly Tuscan feel to it . . .
I have no idea why but my guess is it is something medical.

    PS
What a great photograph of your new friend! I would frame it.

    1. Dear Kirk - my picture might have been sharper if I had cleaned the windows. I would have done that if I had known he was going to come and peer at us.
Once again you are thinking in the right direction re: the building.

  10. I have no idea what it could be, but it gives me the feeling that today is used for something entirely different from that for which it was intended. Your guests are beautiful!.
