St. Jude storm

Evening in Croatia
Do hope that my UK blogging friends and those in western Europe have not suffered any damage or problems during the St. Jude storm. When retiring last night we wondered what we might find when we opened the shutters this morning, but for some unkown reason the storm completely passed us by. Hope everything is well with you all.

  1. That was a beautiful evening in Croatia! The worst of the storm has gone by now, I hope. At noon it was severe, damage everywhere, but sofar only our pergola in the garden collapsed.

    1. I didn't realise that it was hitting the Netherlands too - glad that you escaped with only a collapsed garden pergola - that can be mended. Some people have been crushed here from trees falling.

  2. Dear, so glad you weathered the big one without incident. I'm hoping my family and friends in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire (Cirencester) are all OK too. I've heard there are a lot of areas without power.

    Take care - Mary.

P.S. Such a beautiful shot - Croatia is calling me back!

    1. Dear Mary - I can vouch for your relatives in Cirencester being fine, it is only 10 miles from here. It is peculiar the way it has completely missed us out - our dahlias are still standing tall and the leaves are still on the trees. Some people have experienced trees crashing through their homes and on their cars, and are without power as you mentioned.

    1. Dear Olympia - I do not know why we have got off so lightly, I have been amazed to see that areas not too far from here have lost so many trees, and have no power.

  4. Hello Rosemary, I was just reading about the terrible storm, and looking at the frightening pictures. I am glad that you escaped damage, but unfortunately the storm claimed many victims and much destruction.

    1. Hello Jim - it has been very strange for us to see the damage to places not far from where we live and yet here we are with hardly any wind, blue skies and even some sunshine.

  5. Glad you are well and safe, Rosemary. We've been listening to the radio and hearing about the devastation elsewhere. An unusual light in that photo of an evening in Croatia.

    1. Dear Linda - we feel that we were fortunate to be outside the storms edge, the forecasters had indicated that it would be right over us.

  6. Dear Rosemary,
sad to read about the damages and death by the storm. It has now done big damages in Northern Germany (2 deaths), and is still going on. Here in Berlin we have moderate storm.

    1. Dear Britta - I had not realised that the storm was also affecting parts of northern Europe too. So pleased that you are fine.

  7. Dear Rosemary, So glad that you are safe and that you did not experience any damage. This year has been a most difficult one for so many areas and so many countries. Makes one wonder what is causing all of these unusual weather patterns.

    1. Dear Gina - the weather patterns have been so strange this year - here, we had a long cold spring, and then a very hot summer with hardly any rain. I am hoping that nobody I know has suffered any damage.

    1. Dear Inge - it sounds as if the storms were bad in the Netherlands too. I find winds quite frightening, I always image that the roof tiles will come off. We were very fortunate being outside of the storm zone. It is awful to think that people have lost their lives.

  9. I heard in the news that it will be a storm in the U.K. I'm glad to hear that you''re fine, Rosemary. We'll have a smaller stormy wind tonight here in Finland.

    1. Dear Satu - hoping that the winds are not too strong for you tonight in Finland. Humans are so helpless in the face of the elements - all we can do is sit it out and hope for the best.

  12. Lots of leaves and twigs littered the roads this morning, the roads looked like lanes, other than that nothing serious thankfully. We're on the south coast and it was meant to be worse.

    1. Dear Elizabeth - according to the weather charts it looked as if we were in the eye of the storm, but we experienced just a normal wet autumn night, and today has actually been quite nice. It seems that some people who did not expect to be hit, have been, and others like us have managed to avoid it. So pleased that you have not suffered any problems.

  13. Glad you are OK Rosemary. The storm seemed to pass a lot further south than predicted. Just a lot of leaves to clear up here!

    1. We can now all breath a sigh of relief Jessica. I do not like stormy weather at all. When we were first married we experienced a hurricane whilst living in Scotland and it really frightened us both.

  14. Glad you're ok Rosemary. Last night the storm kept me awake for most of the night, this morning was very terrifying as well, really enormous windsweeps. This storm(Christian) didn't leave any part of Western Europe undamaged but the worst of course are the lives it's taken in several countries.

    1. It sounds as if the storm was worse for you Marian than it was for us. However, other parts of Britain have been very badly hit and several people killed. In my ignorance I had not realised that it had hit so many other countries too. Glad that you are safe - strong winds are terrifying I agree.

  16. Dear Rosemary,

I am glad to hear you were safe. The storm played havoc in The Netherlands.

Thank you for your kind comments on my blog. The girls and I appreciated them very much! It's good to hear your husband and son were both in a rowing team as well! It is a beautiful sport!

Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

    1. Dear Madelief - I understand several people in the Netherlands also lost their lives during the storm. We are helpless against the elements, and just have to sit tight hoping for the best. Fortunately they are a rare occurrence.
H still has his lovely stripe rowing blazer - red, navy blue and pale blue - I suppose it is vintage now.

  17. What a beautiful evening you had in Croatia. I'm glad the storm passed you by, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be here. We had one fence panel down there were quite a number of trees and branches down this morning blocking the roads. It was lucky that the worse of the storm passed over during the night.

    1. Dear Sarah - I am so pleased to learn that all was well with you - one fence panel and some branches one can cope with. It is tragic for those who lost their lives through fallen trees, I keep thinking of that poor young girl asleep in her mobile home and lost her life.

  23. I am glad you avoided what appears to have been a very bad storm, Rosemary. It has not been reported over here - but today we also avoided possible hail storms with high winds, which hit areas of southern Queensland. We had a few spots of rain, and saw distant lightning/thunder. But of course we would have liked the rain! That is a lovely photo of evening in Croatia.

  24. A lovely photo of a tranquil evening scene in Croatia. I'm so glad to hear the storm passed you by, Rosemary. It was a little bit fierce here around breakfast time, but we were lucky - many households around us lost power all day and we escaped that. There are plenty of branches down and leaves everywhere, but no emergencies.
