On the Cusp of September

There is a softness, and a mellow feeling in the air as the Morning Glories now reach their peak
showing luminescent colours in the early morning sunlight
Berries ripen
Artichokes have lovely seed heads
and my porch pots give a gaudy welcome
I was sad that Verbena Bonariensis turned brown in the heat whilst we were absent but luckily they have regenerated themselves again
Shadows lengthen as the sun sinks lower in the sky
These are for birds - our jars and freezer are full
In the garden there is a sense of fruition - job done - time to think about winding down
and on this cusp of September I celebrate yet another birthday

  3. Happy birthday - they do come round quickly don't they! Your flowers are beautiful, soon they will be just a memory as the season turns - but oh we have a glorious Autumn to look forward to.

I also love Autumn with her amber, russet and golden shades

  4. Is that a fig tree I see before me? How wonderful to have the Queen of Fruits there for the picking Rosemary. They are up to $50 a kilo here, but when they drop down now and then I buy two at several dollars each, and have a little ceremony each day to enjoy them! Morning glories are well-named with their gorgeous shade of blue, shown so beautifully in your pictures. Wishing you the happiest of birthdays for tomorrow as you glide in Autumn.

    1. Yes, it is a fig tree Patricia - I like the figs cut in half with a slice of camembert cheese and then wrapped in bacon or pancetta then baked.
Thank you for the birthday greetings - it is today, and the family have just gone out for a walk in the sunshine. After lunch we will all go for a valley walk this afternoon.

  6. Wish you a Happy Birthday Rosemary! Celebrating this with the heavenly blue flowering Morning Glories must be a joy. I love these flowers, unfortunately I have not sown them this year, a shame because they should have done great by these warm and sunny days.
Your posts are always very informative accompanied by beautiful bright photos, thank you so much.
I wish you a lovely September month!

  7. Hello Rosemary, It seems that nothing can interrupt the spell of your garden--each season is as colorful as the next. It is brutally hot in Taiwan right now, so I double appreciated your photo of the shady road.

  8. The best thing about birthdays it that they keep on keeping on and showing up! A very happy Birthday to you my dear, may it just be the start of another wonderful year with many travels to beautiful places. . . . . . . and you sharing your always wonderful photographs with us.

Yes, my figs are left for the birds now - although Bob picked three low hanging juicy ones early this morning when he went down to retrieve the daily paper. I will have them in my yogurt later.
Your Japanese anemones are beautiful - my mum used to grow them - I've tried here but they've never done well with our oppressive heat/humidity.

Enjoy this special birthday - I hope they spoil you big time!

    1. Thank you Mary - I have just this minute opened the door to a wonderful summer bouquet sent via interflora from the little family in Paris, and the rest of us are about to take a walk in Laurie Lee's lovely Slad Valley - slice of bithdaycake on our return.

  10. Happy Birthday, they do seem to come so much quicker than they use to. I have a significant one at the end of September. Our Morning Glories are blooming too, in amongst the weeds that have nearly taken over the garden. When we get home from our trip and the weather has finally gotten cooler I'm going to finally get out in the garden again.

  16. Hello Rosemary! I've taken the summer off of blogging and have enjoyed spending extra time in my garden :) I see you are also celebrating a wonderful end-of-summer, or should we call this the summer that never ends? There have been record temperatures in many places around the globe, including where I live. Here in Quebec, the land of snow and ice, you'll not find one person complaining of the heat! Happy Autumn :)

  17. Happy Birthday, Rosemary. It's a beautiful time for a celebration, so I hope that there is a little something going on for you!
Over here things are much like they are in your part of the world. The shadows are lengthening and the evenings draw in earlier every time we go around the sun. The wild morning glories are climbing crazily up the laurel hedge but at this stage I will let them climb and deal with them later. The are pretty!
