Street Furniture Quiz

Do you know what this street furniture was once used for?
This kiosk is somewhat of a mystery item for many passers-by who wonder what purpose it served.
The kiosk has a "Buck in the Park" emblem on the side being the town's coat of arms, which first appeared on a medieval seal in 1446.
If you answer correctly I will not publish your comment until next week.

  1. Is it a (former) electric transformer kiosk in Derby?

  2. My guess would be either -- (1) an early prototype for a postal box because it has a little slot at the top? or (2) a public urinal because (given the utility cover right in front of it) it is clearly over the sewer system. But one of those panels would have to open for ease of access.

  3. Hello Rosemary, Except that it is a lot fancier, it looks like what would be a mail storage box in the U.S.

    1. The photo is possibly rather deceptive as it is not big enough to hold a person Susan.

  5. I'm not certain when this was constructed, but my guess would be as a central station for wiring - electrical or telephone wires in neighbourhoods.

  6. Is it a local water faucet perhaps?

  7. My best guess ( without looking it up online :o) is some kind of water source for fire prevention... or something to time the trams unless it's older than that period.

  10. What a pretty green kiosk it is. I wonder if it held the daily newspapers, for sale to the public.

  11. Although I don't think these are the same, there are green kiosks in one street of Bristol for access by divers to inspect a river with the street built over it. Very strange to see helmeted divers emerge from them, as I once did.

  12. Having another try: could it be a Policeman's box, not to stand in, but containing a phone, and other equipment to assist in the line of duties?
