Do you know what this street furniture was once used for?
This kiosk is somewhat of a mystery item for many passers-by who wonder what purpose it served.
The kiosk has a "Buck in the Park" emblem on the side being the town's coat of arms, which first appeared on a medieval seal in 1446.
If you answer correctly I will not publish your comment until next week.
Is it a (former) electric transformer kiosk in Derby?
ReplyDeleteMy guess would be either -- (1) an early prototype for a postal box because it has a little slot at the top? or (2) a public urinal because (given the utility cover right in front of it) it is clearly over the sewer system. But one of those panels would have to open for ease of access.
ReplyDeleteSorry Debra - but thank you for trying.
DeleteHello Rosemary, Except that it is a lot fancier, it looks like what would be a mail storage box in the U.S.
ReplyDelete--Jim
Hello Jim - sorry not this time, but you are welcome to give it another try.
DeleteJust guessing, could it be a cabman's shelter or possibly for police officers?
ReplyDeleteThe photo is possibly rather deceptive as it is not big enough to hold a person Susan.
DeleteI'm not certain when this was constructed, but my guess would be as a central station for wiring - electrical or telephone wires in neighbourhoods.
ReplyDeleteIs it a local water faucet perhaps?
ReplyDeleteThanks for trying.
DeleteMy best guess ( without looking it up online :o) is some kind of water source for fire prevention... or something to time the trams unless it's older than that period.
ReplyDeleteIt dates back to 1893 Bob.
DeleteI'm going to have another go-a heater? I'm enjoying the guesses from other people.
ReplyDeleteSorry Susan but happy for you to try again if you wish.
DeleteYou have me completely stumped.
ReplyDelete💙
DeleteIs it a box that served as a transformer box for early electrical lighting system and was known as a 'kiosk'. ? Rosemary!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty green kiosk it is. I wonder if it held the daily newspapers, for sale to the public.
ReplyDeleteNice idea Patricia.
DeleteAlthough I don't think these are the same, there are green kiosks in one street of Bristol for access by divers to inspect a river with the street built over it. Very strange to see helmeted divers emerge from them, as I once did.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds interestingTom - I am going to look them up and see I can see one of them.
DeleteHaving another try: could it be a Policeman's box, not to stand in, but containing a phone, and other equipment to assist in the line of duties?
ReplyDeleteGood try thanks Patricia.
DeleteWhat an intriguing piece of street furniture! The "Buck in the Park" emblem adds a lovely historical touch. I’m curious to learn more about its past purpose! I just posted new post, I invite you to read https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/10/mushroom-coffee-health-benefits-ingredients-guide.html.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a mini church where someone holy is enshrined for people to worship?
ReplyDeleteNice to see you again, Rosemary. I’m caching up after a long summer break.
Yoko
I will the answer next week Yoko - lovely to see you back again.
DeleteI really haven't a clue.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I'm wondering if it's something to do with water!?
Can't wait to find out what it is.
Wishing you a happy month of October.
All the best Jan
