Helgø - a Supermarket?

When visiting other countries, sometimes you come across things that strike you as curious or odd.
I was really taken aback by this supermarket I visited in Norway, and immediately grabbed my camera in order to record what I saw. Everyone else was wandering around picking up their shopping completely oblivious to the extras scattered around.
Now, whatever would British health & safety inspectors make of a stuffed polar bear standing on top of a chiller cabinet selling cooked meat and pâté?
Is it a supermarket wanting to be a natural history museum? Did the shopkeeper have so many taxidermy animals that he did not know what to do with them, or did he have a large building full of animals, and decided he would fill the extra space with a shop?
This is a very small selection of the menagerie within the supermarket.
Grab yourself a trolley and wander around the Helgø aisles with me.

  1. Hello Rosemary:
Oh how we should love to do a trolley dash through this supermarket. Not for anything on the shelves but for all those wonderful stuffed animals. The polar bear is our absolute favourite, we can so well imagine him greeting our visitors in the hall!!

  2. Dear Jane and Lance - poor Timea would have such a lot of extra work keeping him shampooed, brushed and groomed.

  3. Hello Rosemary:
We thought your reply really funny. Not so sure that Timea would welcome any of these stuffed visitors as she is not too happy with the fox we have as it is!!

  4. What a hoot! Clearly there's a story waiting to be told here. I think the owner wanted the polar bear for the cooked meat section, but had to buy an entire estate in the bargain.

  5. Dear Mark you are right, it is a hoot. You, of course, noticed the Eagle Owl!!!

  6. Hello Rosemary, What a surreal shopping trip in this supermarket. I hope the animals don't shed.

I regret missing your earlier posts--one rainy winter day, I'll have to devote to the backlog!

    1. Dear Jim - glad you enjoyed your supermarket trolly dash. I was having an inward chuckle to myself all the way around the shop, not only because of the stuffed animals but also because the other shoppers gave me strange looks as I took photos. To them everything seemed to be normal.
