New Year's Day 2016

It's ages since I shared a quiz with you....
This beautifully crafted mosaic 'object' is something that I have wanted to see for a long time - luckily during the Christmas holidays an opportunity arose.
1. What is it?

   2. Who was it made for?
We were so fortunate to have warm weather, blue skies and sunshine whilst we were away over the Christmas holiday
  Clue number one

Clue number two
Clue number three

  4. Dear Rosemary, I remember when I saw this mosaic cover of Rudolf Nureyev's grave for the first time. So spectacular. It is located near Paris in the Russian Cemetery at Sainte-Genevieve-des-bois.
    Happy New Year. ox, Gina

  5. I'm guessing it's Russian, made for one of the Tsars perhaps.

  7. Happy New Year! This is a hard one. Something for Greek Orthodox Easter?

  8. I would say it's some kind of gorgeous church vestment made for some high-up archbishop or someone in the Eastern Orthodox church. Good Lord, it's beautiful. Happy New Year to you and yours, Rosemary!

  9. Hello Rosemary, Other than beautifully crafted, I have no idea what this is. The whole object looks flexible, but I assume that this is part of the effect, especially as the fringe looks carved.

    1. The folds resemble the object Jim as you have suggested, but it is rigid.

    1. You are not the first to have tried googling the answers when I have done a quiz Amy. I recall one or two others who have done the same, and have sometimes been successful and told me so. I have just tried googling myself using only the clues that I have given and the answer was there, so may be you could give it another shot!!!!

  11. I think this is the kilim like rug on the grave of the dancer Rudolph Nureyev somewhere on an Russian Orthodox graveyard in France.

  14. Whatever it is it is beautiful. It looks like a mosaic, on a wall perhaps. As for the rest, it's just as well my life doesn't hang on getting the answer right.

In spite of the fact I am clueless about the answers, I do love a quiz.

And best wishes for the New Year.

  17. I would guess the church is a Russian Orthodox Church.. Maybe a burial site for royalty....and the brightly colored tiles, a covering or drape over the crypt. Anyway that would be my guess. Happy New Year Rosemary! Janey

  18. Happy New Year Rosemary. It is beautiful and my wild guess it is Paris and could it be Nureyev's grave?

  19. This is a hard one Rosemary, but if I'm correct I must say I would love to visit there, mainly because it's close to Georgia and we have a friend (whom we met in Prague) who lives there and we'd love to meet up with her again!

So I have to say I believe you were in Chechnya Republic, Russia. I'm unable to name the specific mosaic or find anything about it's actual location - but it is gorgeous and is probably in a Russian church or museum, the Russian Orthodox vector cross also being shown.

This was interesting and I learned a lot more about the 1996 war while researching - such sadness for the people - why oh why can't we have a peaceful world, it is so discouraging with conflicts and deaths daily in the news.

Anyway dear friend, thanks for all the beauty to bring to us via your fabulous blog. Here's to more in 2016.
Happy, healthy, joyful New Year to you and your loved ones.

    1. Dear Mary - You are correct on so many different levels here, but you may be surprised to learn that we were not in Chechnya. The particular spot where we were does, however, also represent a period of great sadness for the Russian people but during an earlier time in their history.
I will give you, and you alone dear Mary one further clue. We were in a city that you also visited during 2015.
Your comment is extremely kind and generous - I love the way you do your own very personal and artfully presented blog - it is always a joy and pleasure to read and see.
A happy, healthy and wonderful 2016 to your and your family♡

Do go and see the tomb if you have time. If you do not have your own transport you can get there by train and a local bus.
You can find details from the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation here:-
