We visited some old haunts over the last Bank-Holiday weekend, but by far the biggest treat for us was being able to spend time with both of our sons and their families - it felt as if the good old days were back. We walked the Hicca Way, a route that follows the River Hiz Valley in Hertfordshire. The name of the walk is taken from the Saxon Hicca Tribe who occupied the land around the river, at what is now Hitchin. Here King Offa of Mercia created an important religious settlement in 792AD. When Danish invaders settled just north of the area the Saxons were forced to pay a regular 'Danegeld' tax to save their land from attack. The tax is thought to have been bread rather than silver.
There was an over-the-top profusion of buttercups in the meadows, everything was looking extremely lush, very green, and very golden. I do hope that this also bodes well for the farmers and their crops this year too. The air was filled with the scent of wild flowers along with bird songs and insect chirps. We even heard the iconic sound of our first Cuckoo this year and then watched as it flew across the meadows. When walking with our youngest son there are not many birds or bird songs that escape his attention.
As much as I love Australia, I miss the lushness of the British countryside. The buttercups in the meadows are amazing, and the blossoms overhanging the water remind the population that the future will be fruitful. And covid-free!
ReplyDeleteI do hope that your predictions prove to be correct Hels, it is what we and the whole world fervently desire.
DeleteDid you grow up in England and emigrate to Australia?
I was born and educated in Australia, and knew that as soon as I graduated and married, we would go to Britain for 2-3 years to work and tour. All Australians did, at least back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. We lived for 2 great years in NW London and Herts.
DeleteSince then, I have spent our winter/your summer every second year in the UK.
You have had an interesting life - now I am left wondering if you ever visited Hitchin in Herts?
DeleteI do hope that you may be able to return again one day.
Hello Rosemary, The meadows in temperate climates are glorious--how I miss them! This seems like a good year for plants in Taiwan also--produce which is sometimes flavorless seems at its best this year. Try to go back there when the haws are ripe. Each tree is different, but if you find any good ones, you might want to give those birds some competition!
ReplyDelete--Jim
Hello Jim - I have never cooked haw berries but it is possible to make a jelly preserve from them. We usually pick some blackberries for pies, crumbles and jam, and sloes which are the result of the blackthorn blossom. They make a really delicious sloe gin.
DeleteSounds like a wonderful day! I'm getting my second vaccine shot today so I'm looking forward to that!
ReplyDeleteThat is really good news Debra - I am really pleased for you.
DeleteWhat lush greenery to wander through. The buttercups are so beautiful, as are the hawthorn blooms. There is so much to enjoy in June. I'm glad you can spend time with your family now. We are slowly easing into that, as well, with an outdoor birthday party for two little girls tonight.
ReplyDeleteThis period of time away from our families has been very difficult for everyone. Hope the girls have a wonderful outdoor birthday party tonight - Happy Birthday to them both.
DeleteBeautiful shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks William.
DeleteBeautiful to see all of it, the hawthorn is ever so pretty in flower.
ReplyDeleteWonderful to be able to visit your sons and having life feeling more normal.
Enjoy your journey to a place you haven't been to before.
The Hawthorn is bowed down with blossom this year.
DeleteGlad you are getting to see family again. That looks like a perfect spot for a walk. The Saxon period in history has always fascinated me. Enjoy your weekend. B x
ReplyDeleteMe too Barbara - I love it when I discover a little Saxon church which are often hidden away in the countryside.
DeleteFamiliar-looking countryside to me. There seems to be a profusion of buttercups everywhere this year and cuckoos seem to have made a minor comeback in the last two summers - I've certainly heard more of them.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't done this walk then perhaps you might enjoy it. The Hicca Way starts right next to Arlesey station - the walk takes you to Ickleford and Whitsun Commons and then into Hitchin. We did the walk from Whitsun Commons.
DeleteThat cottage looks like somewhere I almost rented from the Landmark Trust.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pretty but private home but much bigger than it looks as most of it is hidden away in the trees.
DeleteThe Landmark Trust have some lovely properties - I want to stay in The Pineapple built for the 4th Earl of Dunmore.
Yes, me too but I think that - unlike some buildings - the best view is from the outside.
DeleteI bet that your pineapple will be just as wonderful.
DeleteA beautiful area, Rosemary. But the best part of all was that you were able to get together with your sons and their families. We are still not permitted contact of this nature, but soon I hope! It seems like every time restrictions have been relaxed we go right back to another lockdown.
ReplyDeleteI am not fearful of the virus now that I have had my two jabs for such a long time, and it has already proven to be a good protection. The Delta variant is now the most prolific here, but mainly amongst the young.
DeleteIt is wonderful to be able to be relaxed and with the family again - we have missed them all so much. I know that this is the same for everyone, and I do hope that soon you too can be with yours.
Dearest Rosemary,
ReplyDeleteGuess that early June is the very best time in nature as things look fresh and lots of blooms.
You no doubt created great family memories and fed the soul!
Love the water flowing through the land, so peaceful and nourishing many adjacent shrubs and trees.
Hugs,
Mariette
Dear Mariette - yes, we have missed them so much. They gave us a wonderful time which we really appreciated.

DeleteMay and June are the two really colourful months. Don't know that part of England at all so it was nice to see it.
ReplyDeleteMay and June are my favourite months, but why are they going by so fast - I wish that they would slow down.
DeleteGreat that you can now spend time with family. Lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for the vaccine.
DeleteLooks really summer. Fantastic photos.
ReplyDeleteThe year feels as if its wizzing long too quickly and I want it to slow down.
