Valentine's Day

Our local Fish & Chip Shop is quite unique, they really pride themselves on the quality and presentation of their food. A blackboard announces daily just where in the ocean their fish each day comes from, what kind of potatoes they have used, where they were grown, what they have been cooked in, and the food is always served up with large wedges of fresh lemon.
Their offering for this Valentine's Day is a bouquet of fish and chips - potato roses on wooden stems with leaves made out of goujons of fish, all wrapped in some specially printed paper, and tied up with a red ribbon.
We will not be indulging in this ourselves, as we are eating a special Valentine's Day treat courtesy of M&S. However, I must admit that this does look a rather tasty and a very unique presentation.

   ❤️Happy Valentine's Day to you all❤️

  3. This is just an awesome way to serve that good old standby - English fish 'n chips! Sounds like the perfect 'chippy' to have close by - have they ever won a 'best of Britain' award by chance? I recall years ago when my brother took me to the one in Highgate near his home, it was the winner that year, very busy, and very good.

Enjoy your M&S special Valentine treat with your love. I'm off to meet my best girlfriend for lunch (when we made plans we forgot it was Valentine's Day!) - and I'm wearing my red coat from ZARA! This evening Bob and I will grab a bite somewhere - or just stay home with the bubbly by the hearth!
    Love - Mary

    1. They came second twice in a row and won best in Britain in 2016. Once they have won, I think that they then tend to give up entering again and leave the competition to others.
Our M & S deal is so large that we just had the starter tonight with added salads etc, it is all far too much for us, it will keep us going for several more days.
      Enjoy your bubbly tonight❤️

  4. Hello Rosemary, A Happy Valentine's Day to you and your husband! Those fish look good, although it has been a while since I indulged in fried food. Florists' roses have a weird kind of insistent perfection; they almost seem unrelated to the friendly wild or dooryard roses that come out in summer.

  7. I would love to try it. How wonderful to have a fish and chips shop that takes such pride in their product. That is why I love privately owned businesses. I am afraid finding a restaurant that isn't a corporate owned chain is close to impossible in this big city. I really do hate them but it has made me a better cook. haha
    Happy Valentines Day Rosemary! XOXO

    1. We are fortunate in our small town as it is filled with good eateries. We have one of the first organic/vegetarian restaurants in the country, a wonderful local farmers market which also sells homemade produce, people for miles around flock to it, and a great variety of other eating establishments too. Have a lovely day Catherine❤️

    1. Thank you Lorrie - the M&S deal is great value, and you probably know their reputation for good food. The deal only cost £20 - we shall be dining out on it for days. It included a bottle of Prosecco which alone costs £13 to purchase in their shop - we have a starter, a main course that says it would serve 6 people, a side dish, and a lovely dessert together with a box of heart shaped chocolates.

    1. I first read about it in Waitrose's national weekly newspaper, and couldn't understand how you could possibly make a bouquet of roses from fish and chips, but it seems like you can.

  14. What an amazing bouquet! Hope you have enjoyed your M&S meal. I was surprised to see the quality of M&S food, when last in Britain in 2013. Needless to say, we made the most of it. Such a great variety of sandwiches.

    1. M&S food has a very good reputation but is known to be on the more expensive side, however, their special meal deals which they do from time to time are exceptionally great value. When I was getting the 'Valentine's" deal there were loads of other people doing the same. There were about 10 different choices of starter, the same for the mains and the side dishes, and desserts too. A small box of choc. hearts together with a bottle of good wine or prosecco were all included.

  16. Always good to find great fish and chip shops. I have to say England excels in this regard especially in tourist hotspots. Highland Scotland, I'm ashamed to say has some of the worst examples ever visited. I could honestly knock up better myself with oven chips and a cold pork pie, and have many times, and I'm not fussy about basic outdoor food after a walk. 40 years of weekends in Fort William, Skye, and the far north, even dozens of times in Glasgow, however stand as proof- Ullapool and Oban being exceptions with reliably good chip shops. My local one is excellent with teenagers mainly staffing it yet the food is reliably good every time so how can some get it so wrong? Chips, beans, pies or frozen fried fish made myself out of tins or packets I always enjoy every time yet I've tossed suppers in bins half uneaten from many chip shops over the years. Never had a bad supper in the Lake District, covering dozens of different shops over a large area.
M&S meals are excellent- used to get them years ago at Christmas.

    1. I am not a great one for fish and chips but I have had these local ones a couple of times and they are the very best that I have ever had. Mainly a fish and chip supper makes me feel too stuffed, so one between two of us suits me better. I would recommend the M&S Dine in Deals for only £10 - they are excellent value, as was there Valentine Supper deal.

  17. Well, I never! Always amazed at some folks creativity! There is a place here on Anguilla where a lady from England serves fish and chips. We hope we get there before we depart.
In answer to your question. There are still signs here and there of the storm. ..but no piles of debris. There is a very modern set of two story condos on one of the bays where all of the windows are still out. Seems the actor Denzel Washington owns one. There is a dispute with the ins. Company. There are also a lot of unfinished buildings and houses...but they are new construction and the folks here only finished their places when they can pay cash. Oh and Happy Valentines to you!

    1. Thanks for letting me know Janey - it sounds as if they have worked really hard in the island as the hurricane was barely 12 months ago. We watched a series on Anguilla a couple of years ago, and found it to be a really interesting island, and the people appeared to be very happy.

  18. Dearest Rosemary,
FINALLY catching up on blog visits...
Today I drove back and forth to Atlanta again and that is a good 2.5 hours one way. It went perfectly well today, also weather wise.
So happy for having found a class cobbler for trusting my best shoes, boots and leather bags to. He's 3rd generation cobbler and from Russia. Who knows?
Did run the usual errands in Atlanta, including Costco Wholesale and back by 16:05 almost a record time.
Had worked so hard on completing my history posts about Pieter's early years, especially in his fondest of all countries; England. Quite a relief as no longer do I have to worry about unanswered questions, before it would be too late.
There is a lot more to write but this was the most tedious of jobs.
LOVE these potato roses and I've added them to my Pinterest board: Roses as Food.
Wishing you a happy continuation of Valentine's Day for the remainder of the years days.
    Hugs,
    Mariette
