"I cannot endure to waste anything so precious....

...as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house." Nathaniel Hawthorne

A walk around our hilltop escarpment reveals that autumn is now slowly making her colourful entrance.

There is an idyllic arcadian landscape, not too far from where we live, that is especially stunning during the autumn season.

As soon as we can manage a whole day out, walking boots will be packed, not forgetting to take a picnic, then off we shall go.

It looks as if the birds are going to be well fed during the winter. There are so many large clusters of berries hanging on the trees.

  9. Super gorgeous countryside Rosemary, don't blame you and J getting your walking boots at the ready, and of course always the picnic basket.
That cottage with the red ivy is awesome.
We're off to New England for a week soon - the colors are beautiful now and hopefully we'll get to enjoy the lovely scenery where we used to live in New Hampshire.

  10. Looks a really nice area that. I'm looking forward to some autumn colour myself, my favourite season after Spring, and hopefully some dry weather after ten days of wind and rain up here.

  11. Such gorgeous colours in your autumnal photos, Rosemary. I fully agree with the Hawthorne quote - we are enjoying most unusual days of continuing sunshine and warmth and I really hate to be indoors longer than needed. After the morning chill disappears, all the windows are opened wide to let that fresh air inside. An autumn picnic is often more enjoyable than a summer one, for it seems many bugs have disappeared.

  13. How very true. I have a cold and it's raining so it's a sofa day for me! Enjoy your beautiful walk.

  14. Your pictures are beautiful! We are having great color on our side of the pond ( in New England). We have been so dry this year, but the sun brought out the brilliant color too. I love the brilliant ivy on the walls!

  15. Dear Rosemary, you depicted the beauty of autumn so wonderful, thank you! All those colours, and the special autumnal light.
Nathanial Hawthorne is a favourite of mine - in my studies we heard and wrote a lot about him. Your quote reminds me to take him out of the shelf and start reading him again.

  16. Dear Rosemary - So relaxing to take a walk through your beautiful landscape in such lots of sunshine. I love these colored leaves and Cotswold stone walls. Autumn has come at last in my part of the world, a little too hot for October though.
