Autumn's Last Gasp

I totally neglected to take any autumn photos in the garden this year. Last Tuesday was a wonderful sunny day so I had a quick dash around to capture what was left.
I have picked some of these luscious red Rowan berries to make jelly which can go with roast lamb, game and cold meats. There are still plenty left for the birds.

We are heading off for the weekend to Kent. My brother-in-law is holding a special birthday lunch for the family

  4. Brilliant Rowan berries, and gorgeous photographs of them against the blue skies. They always make be think of Christmas carols. And I am speaking severely to my hydrangeas - their leaves are always stubbornly green, and why do they not turn pretty pink like your beauties!

The beach tree colours for your autumn are lovely.

  11. Hello Rosemary, These beautiful pictures remind us of the persistence of autumn, which never entirely yields to winter. In addition to mountain ash, there are other lingering fruits such as haws, rose hips, and persimmons. On a smaller scale, plants such as wintergreen and partridgeberry assure that some of the harvest is available throughout winter.

  17. Hi Rosemary, your certainly picked a good moment to take these beautiful autumn pictures. The light is wonderful! I have never heard of Rowan berries, let alone that you can make jelly out of them, but they look lovely with their bright red color and so do the leaves of the tree. Wishing you a wonderful weekend in Kent!

  18. The Autumn colours have been particularly good in Yorkshire this year - and the leaves are still hanging on. Sadly, there aren't many berries. Give my love to Kent!

  19. Lovely photos of autumn in your garden. The beech tree is wonderful and the leaves are beautiful. I've never tried Rowan Jelly and do love the sound of it. I'll have to hunt for some Rowan trees.
Have a happy weekend in Kent.

  21. Beauty and berries - Autumn spoils us with color. Gorgeous shots Rosemary.
My current post shows color around my 'cottage' - captured just prior to the beautiful leaves fluttering down by the thousands! Then more raking and blowing, but it's lovely being out there in fresh air - and no mosquitoes!!!!!

    Happy weekend - Mary

  23. SO beautiful, Rosemary. Especially those lavendar hydrangea leaves - oh my goodness. All our leaves are mostly gone too. Though we haven't had a very cold Autumn. I've hardly needed to turn on the heat. Nothing as beautiful around here as what you're showing though. :)

  28. Fabulous fabulous photos Rosemary. I spent yesterday afternoon bagging up the 2 ft deep leaves which had become entrapped within the fences of our tiny Hebden Bridge garden. I only have the netting over the pond to clear now, but am waiting for the last few sycamore leaves from a neighbours tree to fall ( into my garden...as I know they will). I enjoyed the clearing job...it revealed some delightful little plants peeking through the bare earth, under all those leaves...and the piles of red and gold leaves looked so gorgeous before I put them into the in bags. Thanks for showing us these beautiful autumn images.... Jxx

  29. Hello, rosemary. You are so lucky to be able to enjoy such gorgeous beauty and fruitfulness of autumn in your garden. I’ve never seen the pink hydrangea leaves, they are so lovely. The climate of my place doesn’t make them turn pink. Your punchy photos almost made me taste the lusciousness of the rowan berries.

  31. One of my priorities is to get some berry producing trees for our property. I was thinking about Rowan for the birds and their pleasing fall colour. Didn't know I could use the berries for human consumption. Sounds like a winner.

  32. Such lovely colours. The Rowan berries so vibrant against that beautiful sky.
Hope you have had a wonderful family week-end.

  34. I hope you had a lovely family weekend. We're still enjoying the colours of autumn here. It's the moorland and woodland ferns that continue to hold my attention as they have changed to a deep copper colour.

  35. Beautiful colours and photography Rosemary. The local trees here seemed to hang onto their green colour for such a long time his Autumn then whoosh they were gone with only a fleeting fiery display. Luckily our garden put on a riotous show and we still have some beautiful colour going on today.
